Michael Nelson

Assistant Director, Writers

Von Lee
517 E. Kirkwood Avenue

Bloomington, IN 47408

Michael leads IU Communications’ team of copywriters and web content specialists. He oversees all writing, editing, and content strategy for print, broadcast, and interactive projects.

Before joining IU Communications, Michael labored at a variety of creative endeavors, from book editing to web development and graphic design to magazine writing and editing. A proud IU alumnus (B.A., English; Ph.D., American Literature), he has been a university staff member for 14 years, first with Instructional Support Services, then with the Office of the Provost, and now with IU Communications. Michael wrote and edited for the Ryder magazine for ten years, and still contributes the occasional article to that august Bloomington publication.

After several summers managing rental property, Michael is adept at house painting and the rapidly disappearing art of window glazing. In his free time, he bakes bread, hikes, and writes about film and television, with a particular fondness for documentaries and horror. He is both a morning person and a night owl, despite having given up caffeine.

The best part of my job is seeing what the content specialists come up with. I like being dazzled, and I’m regularly dazzled by their work.
